I am Look Woon Wei of class 1G and I am currently running for my 1st year in office. For those who still do not know me well, then please read on. For those who think they already know me well enough, then you are excused but I will be expecting your vote!
Now, on to the main question: Why should you vote for me?
You were probably seeking an answer to that question by coming here, correct? Let’s put that aside for now. First, let me tell you some personal information about myself, so that you can know more about me! I hailed from Kong Hwa School, one of the six Hokkien Huay Kuan schools. Now, that does not mean that I can speak Hokkien, but that's besides the point. My current favourite subject is Literature, most probably due to the analysis of the nature of how poems and prose are written. I cherish an ambition to become a defense attorney, and wish to major in criminal law. I enjoy reading and also when time permits, write some poetry, prose, or even play scripts. I really like J.K. Rowling's books (no doubt many of us do), Anthony Horowitz's witty novels and Eoin Colfer's gripping Artemis Fowl series. As for poetry, I enjoy Edgar Allan Poe's poems (a lot), and sometimes some local poets' poems.
No doubt, by now, most of you who have visited this blog may have visited many other councillor wannabes' websites, be it blogs or hand coded, and some may have proclaimed that they are 'servant leaders' or other self-glorifying terms. Of course, there is nothing wrong with such terms - everyone wants to be a servant leader, including myself.
However, what exactly sets me apart from the rest? More importantly, why should you feel compelled to vote for this servant leader over all others?
Well, let us start by first reviewing my achievements thus far as part of Hwa Chong Institution: I... 1) am a councillor-in-training 2) am the class chairman of class 1G 3) have taken part and won 2nd in both ANGLES and 3NGLES 4) taken part in the Oratorical Competition jointly organised by SEF (Scholastic Environmental Fund) and Nan Hua Secondary School, of which I won a Silver award
As you can see, most of the achievements are associated to public speaking. This, hopefully, would help to build your confidence in me when it comes to voicing out your whims and needs. Now that you've seen my achievements, I am sure most of you are wondering how well I cope with my school work. Well, I scored a 1.86 in Term 1 and unfortunately, 2.43 in Term 2. These are not my best results, so don't worry too much (not that you would too much, I think).
Now, what are some of the promises that I will make, if you vote me into office? Well, I promise that if I am voted into office, I shall be YOUR VOICE, and help to represent the student body in making your views and opinions heard, not just down the drain or your imaginary world. Taking the nature of my EP3, Debate, of which we specialise in 2 subjects (mine are Religion and Political Sciences), I am sure that I will be (and am) sensitive and understanding to your needs and voice it out on your behalf (religion is a sensitive matter, after all...). I will also try to help and create more leadership opportunities for the student body, not just confined to the councillors alone.
In conclusion, I would like to share my definition of a good leader with you. Throughout history, there have been many various leaders around the world. Just to name a few, Napoleon, Julius Caesar, Adolf Hitler, Osama bin Laden, Lee Kuan Yew, Gandhi, Princess Diana, and Deng Xiao Ping. We can thus divide these men and women into two groups. One group consists of the leaders who misused their power to conquer and wreck havoc on the community --- Napoleon, Julius Caesar, Adolf Hitler, Osama bin Laden. The other group is made out of the leaders who used the influence and authority vested in them for good and admirable causes --- Lee Kuan Yew, Gandhi, Princess Diana, Deng Xiao Ping.
The first group of leaders did nothing more than to expand their “empires”. Napoleon, Julius Caesar and Adolf Hitler also enriched their country’s coffers while they were at it. However, the leaders which are grouped in the second group are very much different. Lee Kuan Yew is now viewed by many as the “father” of Singapore, Gandhi liberalized India (which now has the 8th largest economy in the world) through purely peaceful methods and Princess Diana was always a world icon for peace, friendship and goodwill. Finally, Deng Xiao Ping transformed China from a communist country with a socialist economy into a blooming, democratic country which currently boasts the 6th largest economy in the world.
Only the leaders in the second group are truly great leaders. True leadership is not achieved through aggression coupled with ambition, but is instead leadership which contributes to the general good of the community. True leadership has both depth and height.
Having said all that, I hope that all of you will vote me into the ProEd Council. I may not have been the best councillor-in-training, or we may have had some misunderstandings prior to this, but I do sincerely wish that you will grant me the privilige to serve you this year (or perhaps, I should say, 2008). I believe that together with your help, I can emulate the leaders in the second group and serve the student body to the best of my ability!
